Carbon Neutral Policy

Reducing our impact on the environment

The Survey Initiative – our carbon management strategy

We at The Survey Initiative are committed to reducing our impact on climate change and the environment. We are currently working towards offsetting our carbon footprint and then work in the long term to reduce our impact.

One of the ways that we are doing this is by supporting the Woodland Trust. We have recently donated towards the Heartwood Forest appeal run by the Trust and also plant trees for every new client we receive in a year.

We also support the Forestry Commission who work towards protecting, expanding and promoting sustainable woodlands across England, Scotland and Wales.

It is our intention to audit our carbon emissions and review our progress against the actions set out below:

Actions:

  1. Ensure lights are turned off in areas when not in use and all lights are turned off at night and over the weekends
  2. Make use of natural light when possible. Use blinds only to direct the light to prevent glare rather than blocking light altogether
  3. Replace filament style light bulbs with energy saving lights
  4. Ensuring the heating thermostat is on the right level, so there is no need to open windows
  5. Turn down the heating thermostat to a maximum of 19 centigrade in winter months
  6. Programme heating systems to only come on to prevent frost over the holidays
  7. Ensure that radiators are not covered
  8. Book regular boiler checks, to ensure systems are working as efficiently as possible
  9. Increase the office building’s insulation and ensure that drafts are blocked
  10. Switch off computers, laptops, printers and other electrical appliances at source when not in use
  11. Repair dripping taps (especially hot water taps)
  12. Only fill kettles with the required level of water
  13. Continue to conduct communications online to reduce paper usage and waste
  14. If printing is necessary, we use FSC certified paper (Forest Stewardship Council)
  15. Encourage staff to set aside the recyclable rubbish
  16. Provide central waste and central recycling collection points
  17. Ask suppliers for their green credentials during the tendering process
  18. Aim to source goods locally where possible
  19. Aim to use video conferencing or telephone instead of travel where possible
  20. For any necessary trips, try where possible to use public transport and try to plan more than one meeting in the area
  21. Encourage staff to practice eco-driving techniques and ensure vehicles are maintained regularly
