These days, most organisations have wised up to the fact that an engaged workforce leads to greater productivity and better staff retention. On top of this, having engaged people creates a happier, healthier place to work.

And while it can sometimes be hard to spot the signs of employees who are becoming less engaged, prevention is always better than the cure.

That’s why forward-looking directors and managers make sure that every aspect of their employees’ working day is examined through the lens of staff engagement.

Time and time again, they’ve found that getting various factors right keeps employees engaged and stops problems happening before they take hold.

The shadow!

I’m a huge fan of learning from ‘people’ and more importantly ‘listening’.  I’ve always felt that you can understand a situation or a person much better if you listen and listen well – some of the best CEOs that I’ve met are those who don’t speak first – they typically let those in the room speak and debate and once the discussion is drawing to a close will offer their view, opinion or take on a situation, having genuinely listened to multiple views and thoughts first.

By learning to listen well, you can really begin to learn and for me this is wonderfully illustrated through the shadow.  We’ve been working with a client recently on intervention work following their recent employee engagement survey – feedback from the survey, and notably from the free text comments, highlighted that there were barriers to cross team/ project working within the organisation (a bit of a silo and fiefdom mentality) … read more »

This Little Girl’s Mum Teaches Us A Lesson About What Fairness Really Means

I overheard a conversation in a shoe shop the other day.  A little girl was bemoaning that her mum wouldn’t buy her a particular set of trainers and she was going to tell her dad how mean her mum was.

I shouldn’t have listened in but I was interested in the reply.  Was mum going to give in, was she going to snap back a retort, was she going to ignore her.  But instead, her mum stopped and asked her why she thought she should have them.  The conversation went something like this:

Girl: “but why can’t I have them, it’s not fair”

Mum: pause… “so, tell me why it’s not fair”

Girl: “you bought them for Lucy last week”

Mum: “yes I did, but why does that mean I should buy you a pair too?”

Girl: “erm…because it’s not fair that she gets a pair and I don’t”

Mum: “but do you know why I bought Lucy a pair?”

How do you organise your project teams?

The majority of us will be required to work in a team at some point in their career, in fact it has become a valuable testing method both in education but also in recruitment and selection. But how can the stage of the project affect how the team is structured and your role in the team?

Traditionally, the person with the most expertise and experience is placed in charge i.e. a chief programmer, assuming they will make the best decisions about how to allocate tasks and responsibilities. You would expect teams that adopt this model to feature a rigid hierarchy, whereby final decisions are centralised through this single, formally designated individual. A predictable downside of this approach is that the person may become a bottle neck or particularly as projects increase in complexity and team size.
