GEANT had never undertaken a staff engagement survey before but was keen to benchmark performance and to identify issues that were affecting its permanent staff, contractors and senior management team.
What did we do?
We created a questionnaire that took into account two distinct employee groups: agency / contractor personnel and permanent staff, ensuring the questions reflected their contract status. The questionnaire also included routing to include a specific section to gather the views of the senior management team.
We fed back the results to the two General Managers, and created a presentation to deliver the feedback to the wider leadership team. Following the presentation Gary at Survey Initiative facilitated a discussion group with the leadership team to decide on a course of action to move the business forward
Nothing surprised the HR or senior management team about the results, but it gave GEANT the evidence to further develop a higher performance culture.
The survey achieved an exceptionally high response rate of 89%.
GEANT enjoys a very high employee engagement score, but was keen to find out about the areas where they could make improvements. The key areas for development proved to be communication, leadership and learning and development.
Not to rest on their laurels the senior management team took action immediately and engaged the entire workforce to give ideas on how the organisation could move forward.
One initiative, which was a step to improving communication and learning and development, was the introduction of a new appraisal system. Communication was also boosted by managers encouraging dialogue from the top down and bottom up within the organisation.
Thanks to the benchmarking activity GEANT has set a number of measures in place to further boost its employee engagement throughout the business. The HR team hopes to run a further employee engagement survey in 18 months’ time to discover the results of these actions.
