How do you organise your project teams?

The majority of us will be required to work in a team at some point in their career, in fact it has become a valuable testing method both in education but also in recruitment and selection. But how can the stage of the project affect how the team is structured and your role in the team?

Traditionally, the person with the most expertise and experience is placed in charge i.e. a chief programmer, assuming they will make the best decisions about how to allocate tasks and responsibilities. You would expect teams that adopt this model to feature a rigid hierarchy, whereby final decisions are centralised through this single, formally designated individual. A predictable downside of this approach is that the person may become a bottle neck or particularly as projects increase in complexity and team size.

The Survey Initiative And Vimto Make Shortlist Of CIPR Pride Awards

We’re delighted that our work in partnership with soft drinks giant, Vimto, has been shortlisted for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations CIPR Pride Awards (Anglia, Thames and Chiltern) for Best Internal Communications Campaign.

We’ve been working with Vimto for three years and have helped the company achieve incredibly high levels of employee engagement, as well as supporting the company in the development of its values. Lynne Poole, Head of Human Resources, Vimto, explains: “We have always prided ourselves on being a great place to work. Thanks to The Survey Initiative we have been able to pinpoint areas we can become even better at. We’ve all done it – I know I have!

It’s very easy to believe that “lunch is for wimps” – you’re so busy and important that you don’t have time to step away from your desk, to take a break, to eat. Maybe it’s peer pressure – you’re concerned that your team mates will frown on you, think you’re not pulling your weight if you’re not glued to your seat from 9 till 5. Perhaps it’s the boss you’re afraid of – thinking you obviously haven’t got enough to do or that you don’t care about meeting deadlines.

Don’t worry about the boss.

You’ll probably find that he/she actually wants you to take a break. Getting strong response rates on staff surveys

Our staff surveys constantly achieve a response rate of at least 85% which gives our clients an excellent insight into the thoughts and minds of their employees. How do we achieve this? Here’s our approach:

  • First up we meet with the board to get their view on what should be included in the staff survey, what they think is going on in the organisation and discuss strategic goals.
  • We also meet with managers to understand their views and needs from the staff survey.
  • Employees are also invited to pre-survey focus groups to gain their thoughts and support.
  • Once these consultations are complete a bespoke survey is created to really get to grips with the issues effecting an organisation.
  • Once the survey is live we ensure access to all. For site workers we offer bacon baps, mobile devices and paper surveys for them to complete in their preferred way during work time.

    We’ve been assisting organisations in the construction sector for over 10 years. Our staff surveys consistently achieve higher than industry average response rates, which has helped us grow our client base with a wide range of construction and building industry organisations, such as BuroHappold, Saint-Gobain, Mouchel, Atkins and Story Homes.

    Over the past quarter we’ve secured a number of new business wins in the construction sector, and delighted to add crane hire specialists, Ainscough to our client list.
